Foxface Rabbitfish

The Foxface Rabbitfish (Siganus vulpinus) is a striking and popular marine fish, celebrated for its vibrant coloration and beneficial role as an algae grazer.

Also known as the Foxface Lo or Common Foxface, this species has a unique appearance with a bright yellow body and a white face. A distinct black band runs from its mouth through the eye to the start of its dorsal fin, giving it a "fox-like" appearance. This fish is not only aesthetically pleasing but also a valuable addition to a reef aquarium for its ability to help control nuisance algae.

Fish Profile

  • Distinctive Coloration: The body is a vibrant yellow, while the head and front part of the body are white. It has a black band from its mouth through the eye. When stressed or at night, it can camouflage by changing to a mottled, dark brown color.

  • Venomous Spines: Like all rabbitfish, it has venomous spines in its dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins. The sting from these spines can be painful, so care should be taken when handling this fish.

  • Temperament: A peaceful species that can be housed with more aggressive fish, as its spines deter predators. It is territorial towards its own species and other rabbitfish, so it is best to keep only one per aquarium unless as a mated pair.

  • Reef Compatibility: Considered reef-safe with caution. If not well-fed, it may nip at or consume some soft and large polyp stony (LPS) corals.

  • Diet: A herbivore that feeds primarily on algae. Its diet should be supplemented with marine-based seaweed, algae sheets, and high-quality herbivore pellets.

  • Care Level: Moderate. They are considered hardy fish once properly cared for in a well-established aquarium.

  • Aquarium Requirements: This species can reach up to 9.8 inches (25 cm) in length. A minimum tank size of 70 gallons is recommended, with plenty of open swimming space and live rock for grazing and hiding.
