Jewelled Blenny
The Jewelled Blenny (Salarias fasciatus), commonly known as the Lawnmower Blenny, is a fascinating and active fish prized for its unique personality and its role as an excellent algae grazer.
This species is named for its beautiful olive to brown body with a pattern of dark bars and numerous round or elongated white spots. It is a popular addition to many marine aquariums due to its comical "perching" behavior on live rock and its diligent work in consuming nuisance algae.
Fish Profile
-
Distinctive Coloration: The body has a mottled tan or olive-brown color with many round or elongated white spots. It possesses a remarkable ability to change its coloration to camouflage with its surroundings.
-
Temperament: The Jewelled Blenny is generally peaceful with most other tank mates. However, it can be territorial and aggressive towards other blennies or similar-looking fish. It is best housed as a single specimen unless in a very large aquarium with a mated pair.
-
Reef Compatibility: Generally considered reef-safe, but with caution. It is known to nip at small-polyped stony corals and clam mantles.
-
Diet: Primarily a herbivore and detritivore. It is a very effective algae eater, especially for filamentous and hair algae. Its diet can be supplemented with vegetable matter, spirulina, and other herbivore preparations. It requires a well-established tank with plenty of natural algae to graze on.
-
Care Level: Easy. This is a hardy species that is a great choice for beginner aquarists.
-
Aquarium Requirements: This species can reach a maximum length of 14 cm (5.5 inches). It requires an aquarium of at least 150 liters (approximately 40 gallons), but a larger tank is recommended to ensure a sufficient food source. It needs plenty of live rock for perching and hiding. This species is also known to jump from open aquariums.
