Segmented Blenny (Medium)

The Segmented Blenny (Salarias segmentatus) is an engaging and beneficial species, celebrated for its unique striped pattern and its role as a diligent algae grazer.

Also known as the Segmented Sailfin Blenny, this fish is a great addition to both a novice and an experienced aquarist's tank due to its personality and hardiness. It has a body that is vertically striped with alternating bands of yellow and reddish tan. A medium size is typically between 1" and 3".

Fish Profile

  • Distinctive Coloration: Its body is "segmented" with alternating vertical bands of yellow and reddish-tan or brown. The face is often speckled with tiny white polka-dots.

  • Temperament: Generally peaceful with most tank mates but may become aggressive or territorial towards other blennies or fish with a similar shape. It is best to keep only one per aquarium unless it is a mated pair in a very large tank.

  • Reef Compatibility: Considered reef-safe, but with caution. If not well-fed or in tanks with small colonies, it may nip at the polyps of SPS corals.

  • Diet: An herbivore that will continuously graze on algae in the aquarium. It requires a well-established aquarium with plenty of natural algae to feed on, and its diet should be supplemented with algae-based foods like spirulina and herbivore preparations.

  • Care Level: Moderate.

  • Aquarium Requirements: A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended. It needs plenty of rockwork for perching, hiding, and grazing. Blennies are known to jump, so a tight-fitting lid is essential.
