Gold-saddle Rabbitfish (Small)

The Gold-saddle Rabbitfish (Siganus guttatus), also known as the Orange-spotted Spinefoot, is a peaceful and beneficial addition to a large marine aquarium.

This species is prized for its unique coloration, which includes a beautiful dusky blue body with a silvery underside and a prominent, large yellow-orange spot near the base of its tail. Its body is also covered in numerous smaller reddish-brown or orange spots. This small specimen, typically 1" to 2" in size, is an excellent algae grazer and can help maintain a clean and healthy tank.

Fish Profile

  • Distinctive Coloration: The body is covered in beautiful orange spots, with a single large yellow-orange spot near the tail. It can change color, becoming darker and blotchier at night or when stressed for camouflage.

  • Venomous Spines: Like all rabbitfish, it has venomous spines in its dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins that it uses for self-defense. While a sting can be painful, it is generally not dangerous to humans.

  • Temperament: A very peaceful species that can be housed with more aggressive fish due to its venomous spines. It should be kept singly, as it may squabble with other rabbitfish.

  • Reef Compatibility: Considered reef-safe with caution. It may nip at and consume some species of LPS and soft corals if not sufficiently fed.

  • Diet: A herbivore that feeds primarily on algae. Juveniles tend to consume filamentous and film algae. It is crucial to provide algae sheets and other algae-based foods.

  • Care Level: Moderate.

  • Aquarium Requirements: This species can reach up to 17 inches in length. Even a small specimen requires a spacious aquarium to accommodate its active nature and large adult size. A minimum tank size of 125 gallons is recommended, with plenty of open swimming space and rockwork for hiding.

Care Requirements

  • Minimum Tank Size: 125 gallons

  • Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)

  • Salinity: 1.020-1.025

Add this beautiful and active rabbitfish to your tank to enjoy its lively and colorful presence.
