The Pacific Sailfin Tang (Zebrasoma veliferum) is a magnificent and commanding species, celebrated for its impressive size and iconic, sail-like fins.

As an adult, this surgeonfish has a disc-shaped body with a dark gray to brown color and a pattern of pale, vertical bars. Its most striking features are the greatly enlarged dorsal and anal fins, which it can extend to almost double its size. • Distinctive Coloration: The adult has a body that is dark gray to brown with vertical pale bands. It is capable of rapidly changing its color, either lightening its pale bars or darkening them until they merge with the rest of its body.

• Temperament: This species is considered semi-aggressive and can be territorial. It is aggressive towards other tangs, especially those of a similar shape or size, and is best kept as a single specimen in the aquarium.

• Diet: Primarily an herbivore, it requires a diet rich in marine-based seaweed and algae to strengthen its immune system and overall health.

• Care Level: Moderate. It is a hardy fish once acclimated but is susceptible to diseases like Ich if not maintained in pristine water conditions.

• Aquarium Requirements: This species can reach up to 15 inches (38 cm) in length. Due to its large size and active swimming nature, a minimum tank size of 180 gallons (680+ liters) is necessary. The aquarium should have plenty of open swimming space and ample live rock for grazing and hiding.
